Down Syndrome Month Spotlight: Nothing can stop Ty

In honor of Down Syndrome Acceptance month, we’re shining a light on some of the fantastic self-advocates in the DSAmd community!

First up: Tyresse - or, Ty for short. Here’s a little about Ty’s life as a young adult, in the words of his mother, Sheri.

My son, Tyresse, is 21 years old and recently started his journey at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) through the Single Step Program. As his mom, I have to say this has been such a blessing. We were not always sure if college would be possible for Ty. As a young adult with Down syndrome, new environments can sometimes feel scary or overwhelming. From the very beginning, he has shown us just how capable, determined, and independent he can be.

Each day when I drop him off, I see his confidence grow. He moves around campus with ease, goes to class on his own, and is learning to take more responsibility for himself. The teachers and staff at CCBC have been incredibly supportive, stepping in when he needs help while still encouraging him to do as much as he can independently.

Tyresse says he loves college because it makes him feel independent. He is proud to be part of campus life. He has already made new friends and looks forward to spending time with them. He enjoys learning new things, being included, and having the chance to be like any other young adult finding his way.

As his mother, I am beyond thankful that programs like Single Step exist. They not only provide education but also give our children the chance to experience real independence, build friendships, and prepare for life beyond school. Down syndrome does not define Tyresse. His determination, his joy, and his bright future do.

We are excited about what is ahead for him. Nothing can stop Ty.
