Yoga for and by the Down Syndrome community

One thing keeps coming up in our conversations with individuals with DS and families: Movement is key. Exercise is vital.

DSAmd has been offering boxing classes in two counties for a few years now. And Cardio Dance with Corissa on Zoom reaches people from Maryland and other states since the pandemic! Now we are pleased and excited to offer Yoga for the Down Syndrome community, by the Down Syndrome community.

Led by Yvonne Hu Cotto, DSAmd parent, on Select Saturdays in Howard County, DSAmd offers a 2.5 hour block of time for movement, community networking, and skill-builiding, with Yoga with Yvonne, and with DSAmd Improv immediately before or after. All ages are welcome and encouraged to attend. People with and without Down syndrome are welcome.

Learn More and sign up here for one or both events on future Saturdays!

Instructor Yvonne notes:

“Over 15 years ago, I was exposed to The Sonia Sumar Method - Yoga for all Abilities and thought that all people with DS and their family members in Maryland should practice yoga.

That seed lied dormant for over a decade because, well, life got in the way.

Last month, I was able to fulfill this dream by teaching the first family yoga class at Kathryn Grace School/Childrens’ Therapy Center in Columbia. Thank youto the Down Syndrome Association of Maryland for entertaining all my wild ideas. And to The Yoga Center of Columbia, Maryland, for the amazing training and believing that all people can do yoga.”
